J-1 Training Visa

The J-1 visa provides an excellent opportunity for recent college level graduates to come to the United States and gain valuable experience in the field related to their formal education. A U.S. employer is required.

J-1 training is available in the following occupational categories:

  • Public Administration and Law
  • Management, Business, Commerce and Finance
  • Information Media and Communications
  • Science, Engineering, Architecture, Mathematics and Industrial Occupations

This includes, but is not limited to:

Law * Public Administration * Communications * Journalism * Broadcasting Publishing * Information Media * Web Design * E-Commerce * Computer Science Architecture * Engineering * Environmental Protection * Finance * Mathematics Auditing * The Sciences * Skilled Industrial Occupations * Commerce * Import/Export Strategic Planning * Management * Marketing * Accounting * Business * Software Development

The International Trainee is eligible if he or she:

  • Has a degree or professional certificate from an academic institution outside of the United States plus one year of non-U.S. work experience related to the proposed training, or at least five years of non-U.S. work experience related to the proposed training.
  • Proposed J-1 training does not duplicate his or her previously completed work or training.
  • Sufficient English-speaking skills so as to be able to fully benefit from the training and cultural opportunities in the United States.
  • Can demonstrate how the training will be used upon return to the home country.
  • Can demonstrate the intent to return to the home country.
  • Will apply in his or her home country for the J-1 visa .

The U.S. Employer is eligible if it:

  • Has been in business at least 24 months.
  • Will adequately remunerate the J-1 Trainee.
  • Has established a bona fide training program.
  • Will not engage the Trainee in ordinary employment.
  • Has at least ten (10) employees and has sufficient annual revenues to support a trainee program.
  • Has less than 10% of its of its total staff members in a J-1 Exchange.
