Haitians Now Have 6 More Months to Seek Temporary Protected Status

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services is giving eligible Haitian nationals an extra 180 days to apply for Temporary Protected Status (TPS). The deadline has been extended to January 18th, 2011.
TPS is a relief program for Haitians who have lived in the United States since January 12th, 2010, the day the earthquake occurred. Haitian citizens who entered the United States after that date are not eligible for the program. The program allows Haitians to continue living and working in the United States for the duration of the program.
Due to the long recovery Haiti is facing, some Haitians have had difficultly obtaining documents needed to apply for TPS. Others may need more opportunity to gather funds for the application fees or to learn about the process for fee waivers.
Extending the registration period gives those individuals more time to prepare their applications and remain in the United States during this time of devastation in Haiti.
For TPS information and application forms, visit www.uscis.gov or call the toll-free USCIS forms line at 1-800-870-3676.
